Making Sense of Warehouse Layout Philosophies

Developing a warehouse layout can be a daunting task without understanding the important warehouse layout philosophies. Grasping the knowledge of these philosophies and using techniques based on overall company warehouse and distribution - operation and product flow will ultimately assist with proper layout design.

The greatest potential to optimize your ROI is when the designer completely understands your business. For this to occur, the designer must:

1) Visit the facility
2) Observe all operations
3) Clearly understand information and product flow
4) Observe product handling methods and equipment
5) Interview personnel
6) Obtain requested data on inbound, outbound, and inventory characteristics
7) Obtain all the building and equipment layout drawings.

What are the Philosophies?

* SKU Popularity Philosophy: Pareto's Law
* Type of SKU Handled Philosophy
* MHE Travel Distance Philosophy
* Family Group Philosophy
* Storage Method Philosophy

For details on these strategies, view "Making Sense of Warehouse Layout Philosophies" white paper from Envista.

"At Battery Ventures we are looking to acquire technology-based businesses in attractive markets that, through innovation and a strong product development history, have established market leadership," said Dave Tabors, general partner, Battery Ventures. Apriso announced the first enterprise Warehouse Management System (WMS) specifically designed and built for manufacturers. Rather than delivering yet another WMS product to better manage distribution centers, FlexNet Warehouse Management for Manufacturers is an innovative solution with a unique approach of improving manufacturing agility and operations performance. These benefits are accomplished by natively integrating warehouse operations with production processes to eliminate idle inventory, provide complete traceability across production and the supply chain, increase quality and drive Lean initiatives as a comprehensive material flow management system.

“The implementation of a warehouse management system built from a manufacturer’s perspective offers a differentiated approach to extend Lean initiatives into the warehouse,” commented Steve Banker, director of supply chain management at ARC Advisory Group. “Pull systems such as Kanban, Just In Time and Just In Sequence are common within best in class manufacturers. The implementation of a platform supporting business processes spanning production and material flows adds a new level of performance improvement, driving further waste from already Lean processes.”

As a module of the FlexNet Operations Execution System, FlexNet Warehouse Management for Manufacturers delivers a comprehensive solution to synchronize raw materials, components and semi-finished goods with production, manufacturing, fabrication and assembly operations. By leveraging the benefits of FlexNet’s Global Manufacturing Suite, this material flow management system can be deployed locally at the warehouse while being managed globally, across the enterprise, to allow Lean, Quality and other Continuous Improvement initiatives to spread from a pilot site across the global enterprise.

FlexNet Warehouse Management for Manufacturers is an advanced solution that allows manufacturers to:
§ Enhance efficiency and accuracy within the warehouse and production line for improved operations performance
§ Increase manufacturing agility and throughput, supporting a demand-driven supply chain
§ Reduce inventory and WIP, extending Lean initiatives into your warehouse
§ Provide comprehensive ‘dock-to-dock’ traceability and genealogy to improve quality while cost effectively achieving regulatory compliance
§ Improve customer satisfaction by addressing market changes with extreme agility across warehouse and production operations
§ Decrease the cost of quality and Six Sigma through smart sampling and inspection processes

“Achieving tight integration between production and warehouse operations has provided full traceability for materials and finished goods flows while enabling the highest level of responsiveness to changing demand conditions within our production line and supply chain,” said Rustam Sanaev, IT Operations Manager, BAT (British American Tobacco). “The FlexNet platform is vital, facilitating performance improvement within both warehouse and production operations, allowing us to significantly improve our production ability within an increasingly complex operations environment to best serve multiple customer segments.”

Cadre Technologies releases new version of Cadence Web Access, an integrated module of the Cadence Fulfillment warehouse management system (WMS). Web Access will allow better information, performance and service for third-party logistics (3PL) providers and fulfillment companies.

Web Access offers several unique features:
§ Storefront capabilities that individually present 3PL clients’ products via customer specific electronic catalogs of inventory in the warehouse. For example, an end-user customer ordering from their supplier sees the retailers’ themed Web page which is actually managed by the 3PL provider with whom the retailer warehouses its inventory.
§ Style sheets that organize information such as product images, units of measure, product specifications, etc. and offer print-on-demand functionality, perfect for literature fulfillment.
§ “Self service” capabilities available 24x7 that allow the client to attach product specification sheets, define distribution lists, kitting and product allotments and manage users and customer session histories.
§ Integrated reporting capabilities give clients the ability to review the Cadence Fulfillment WMS for real-time information about inventory levels, order status, etc.
