New Software Abounds for Third Party Logistics (3PL)
Solutions
for 3PL providers are abundant! We now record
82 software solutions
for this industry in our software
directory. In 1999, our research consulting firm located only
24 software solutions capable of 3PL functionality. This is great
news for 3PL companies
A Fast & Brief History of 3PL WMS
How many of us remember the original WMS solutions that supported
3PL functionality? LDS, Maves, and Delfour. Both Delfour and LDS
have completed a rewrite of their solutions over the last few
years. Provia Software bought a 3PL product "Foresite"
and now offers two WMS solutions.
EXE has a large 3PL install base, but has been punished by Wall
Street and it's stock price is hovering around 50 cents a share.
Many WMS solutions are providing 3PL functionality now and so
are a few ERP solutions. Recent entries into the 3PL WMS pack
this year includes Cadre Technologies and Manhattan Associates
with their PkCost billing module.
How Do We Evaluate What's Best
First - Ask yourself a few questions about your operations.
- How complex is the operation? Small & simple? Complex?
- What verticals are we supporting that need special functionality?
Frozen foods? Grocery? Pharmaceutical? Auto Parts? Aircraft
Parts? Serialized & Lot Controlled Items? Special value
added functions? Unusual Billing & Storage computation
formula's (in comparison to others in the industry)? Each
vertical has special requirements.
- Do you want multi-lingual solution? Do you need a TMS and/or
a YMS?
- What databases & operating systems does your IT staff
have strong experience in? What is the preferred database
& operating system?
Armed with the answers to those questions, one may start to narrow
the list of 82 solution providers down. It is still imperative
to do the following steps:
- Start a new fresh search.
- Build a strong RFP with a strong set of WMS questions. Make
those questions work for you. Describe your company, warehouses,
work flows, expectations, and goals.
- Use the returned proposals to filter out weaker solutions.
Beware of solutions that only handle product ownership. 3PL
providers need much more than that! Focus only on the stronger
ones.
- The RFP
questions should include 3PL ownership functionality,
3PL storage & task billing functions, allocation methods,
reporting & data functions to/from the customer, and exception
reporting regarding performance of various parties involved.
- Have the software demonstrated in detail at your site, using
your data, if possible. Work through demonstration scenarios
of work flows, that you have provided to the vendor.
- Select vendor of choice.
- Model your new software with a conference room pilot setup.
- Test - Test - Test - AND Test. Then go live.
Final Words
Solutions for 3PL operations are the toughest, since it can get
extremely complex. It one warehouse can hold products owned by
100 customers and each customer has requirements for allocation,
notification, packing list.... Each customer has different contracted
rates for storage and tasks. The software has to have solid functionality
designed for workflows, be intuitive, and yet "complex".
This article 'simplifies' the serious nature of a software selection
process. It is very involved and needs to be done right. See the
white
papers on our website at http://www.idii.com/wp/index.htm
for additional tips & information on software selection and
implementation. Many good consulting firms are available to help
you. Our Advanced
WMS RFI Bundle will help.

in Central America via E-soft company for the company's Shop-Floor Control
and Full-Package Management Software. Working in partnership with E-Soft,
a company that provides technology consulting services to apparel producers
and full-package providers in Central America, New Generation Computing,
a wholly owned subsidiary of American Software, has added sales representatives,
programmers and project implementation and support personnel to service
new and existing customers in El Salvador, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Costa
Rica and Belize. The expansion comes at a time that the demand in Central
America for two of New Generation Computing's software products -- TPM,
or The Production Manager, and FPM, or Full Package Management System
-- has increased over the past few years that the company and E-Soft
have worked together.
- Anisa

the RIVAStore warehouse management system (WMS) business from azurri..
The deal is for the total WMS business including software, staff and
customer base and further strengthens Anisa Group's ERP software solution
"Open Business Solutions". RIVAStore is a warehouse management
solution (WMS) having established a customer base, which includes Eli
Lilly, Christian Salvesen, Hozelock, Allied Carpets and Rosebys. Open
Business Solutions will now support azurri’s customers providing them
with an ongoing future strategy for WMS solutions.
- AquiTec

- EXE
Technologies Inc., (WMS, Optimization, 3PL, Nasdaq:EXEE) has introduced
EXceed(TM) Warehouse Planner, a logistics workflow analysis
program that increases order fill rates by optimizing a company's use
of manual and automated fulfillment resources.
-
An increasing number of variables in the fulfillment process make
it difficult for businesses to ensure efficient order collection and
distribution. Labor forecasting, demand surges and order priority
can unbalance workloads and cause bottlenecks, slowing the shipment
of customer orders. To better manage this situation, Warehouse Planner
rapidly performs "what if" analysis against the backlog
of shipment orders, accounting for available resources and organizing
the workflow process to enhance order throughput and resource utilization.
- Irista,
Inc. (WMS, TMS) highlights the latest features of their iristaWare™
8.3 release. New capabilities of the iristaWare suite include:

for a separate Powership server. This release includes updates to compliance
labels and manifests to support FedEx US Origin to US. New capabilities
include global messaging to support FedEx Express and Ground Services
including Home Delivery.
iristaTransport Announces support for UPS® Host Access:
This allows high volume shippers or

guides, and electronic manifesting while distributing the printing of
shipping documentation and compliance labels. This approach simplifies
contract maintenance, improves performance, and integrates UPS tracking
capabilities at an enterprise level. In addition, customers can take
advantage of Centralized PLD (Package Level Detail) upload to UPS along
with Simplified Format Manifesting (SPF).
Enhanced LTL and Truckload Planning Functions: iristaTransport’s

has been enhanced to include support for a JAVA Message Service (JMS)
Adapter providing a “plug and play” environment with leading Enterprise
Application Integration (EAI) products such as IBM’s Websphere®

- Provia
Software (WMS, TMS) Announces Windows 2000 Version of ViaWare WMS.
Available December 15, Provia's Windows 2000 WMS has exactly the same
robust functionality as the company's powerful Unix-based product because
the same source code is used for both versions. By
offering the same WMS product for both Unix and Windows 2000, Provia
is delivering a standard, scaleable and database independent solution
capable of meeting the needs of the most demanding WMS environments.
"For companies with advanced WMS requirements such as wave building,
labor planning, task management, advanced kitting, automatic replenishment,
compliance labeling, serial number/catch weight capture, cross docking,
cluster/batch picking, and cycle counting, Provia's ViaWare WMS for
Windows 2000 is up to the task," said Ken Lewis, Provia president
and CEO. "Because we use the same source code for both
platforms, the Windows 2000 version has already essentially been tested
in the field by our current Unix customers. With Provia,
there are none of the 'new' product concerns for prospects looking
for a full-featured Windows 2000 WMS. The only difference between
this version and our Unix version is the platform."
- SuSE Linux and SAP AG (ERP, NYSE ADR: SAP) announced a global technology
partnership. SuSE is the first Linux enterprise
operating system to enable SAP clients worldwide to run SAP's leading

any special On-line Analytical Processing (OLAP) knowledge.
The Document Flow Manager allows a company to automate
business processes and build communication infrastructures that facilitate
seamless collaborative commerce. The Document Flow Manager automates
the flow of business transactions as they electronically arrive at a
company in a document format defined using XML. Inbound and outbound
transactions can be tracked and posted directly and automatically into
and from the ERP system.
SYSPRO CRM closes the gap between the front office
and the back office by integrating all activities without duplicating
input. With SYSPRO CRM sales, market and customer support operations
work collaboratively to achieve total customer satisfaction. SYSPRO
CRM offers powerful synchronization features and web tools to facilitate
remote and off-line access via browser, laptop and web-enabled portable
or handheld PDA devices.
SYSPRO APS provides planners with an easy-to-use finite
scheduling tool aimed at improving lead times, increasing production
flexibility, reducing inventory levels and speeding delivery times.
Enhancements to nearly all-existing SYSPRO modules.
