New Software Abounds for Third Party Logistics (3PL)

Solutions for 3PL providers are abundant! We now record 82 software solutions for this industry in our software directory. In 1999, our research consulting firm located only 24 software solutions capable of 3PL functionality. This is great news for 3PL companies

A Fast & Brief History of 3PL WMS

How many of us remember the original WMS solutions that supported 3PL functionality? LDS, Maves, and Delfour. Both Delfour and LDS have completed a rewrite of their solutions over the last few years. Provia Software bought a 3PL product "Foresite" and now offers two WMS solutions.

EXE has a large 3PL install base, but has been punished by Wall Street and it's stock price is hovering around 50 cents a share. Many WMS solutions are providing 3PL functionality now and so are a few ERP solutions. Recent entries into the 3PL WMS pack this year includes Cadre Technologies and Manhattan Associates with their PkCost billing module.

How Do We Evaluate What's Best

First - Ask yourself a few questions about your operations.

  1. How complex is the operation? Small & simple? Complex?
  2. What verticals are we supporting that need special functionality? Frozen foods? Grocery? Pharmaceutical? Auto Parts? Aircraft Parts? Serialized & Lot Controlled Items? Special value added functions? Unusual Billing & Storage computation formula's (in comparison to others in the industry)? Each vertical has special requirements.
  3. Do you want multi-lingual solution? Do you need a TMS and/or a YMS?
  4. What databases & operating systems does your IT staff have strong experience in? What is the preferred database & operating system?

Armed with the answers to those questions, one may start to narrow the list of 82 solution providers down. It is still imperative to do the following steps:

  1. Start a new fresh search.
  2. Build a strong RFP with a strong set of WMS questions. Make those questions work for you. Describe your company, warehouses, work flows, expectations, and goals.
  3. Use the returned proposals to filter out weaker solutions. Beware of solutions that only handle product ownership. 3PL providers need much more than that! Focus only on the stronger ones.
  4. The RFP questions should include 3PL ownership functionality, 3PL storage & task billing functions, allocation methods, reporting & data functions to/from the customer, and exception reporting regarding performance of various parties involved.
  5. Have the software demonstrated in detail at your site, using your data, if possible. Work through demonstration scenarios of work flows, that you have provided to the vendor.
  6. Select vendor of choice.
  7. Model your new software with a conference room pilot setup.
  8. Test - Test - Test - AND Test. Then go live.

Final Words

Solutions for 3PL operations are the toughest, since it can get extremely complex. It one warehouse can hold products owned by 100 customers and each customer has requirements for allocation, notification, packing list.... Each customer has different contracted rates for storage and tasks. The software has to have solid functionality designed for workflows, be intuitive, and yet "complex".

This article 'simplifies' the serious nature of a software selection process. It is very involved and needs to be done right. See the white papers on our website at http://www.idii.com/wp/index.htm for additional tips & information on software selection and implementation. Many good consulting firms are available to help you. Our Advanced WMS RFI Bundle will help.

  • EXE Technologies Inc., (WMS, Optimization, 3PL, Nasdaq:EXEE) has introduced EXceed(TM) Warehouse Planner, a logistics workflow analysis program that increases order fill rates by optimizing a company's use of manual and automated fulfillment resources.
  • An increasing number of variables in the fulfillment process make it difficult for businesses to ensure efficient order collection and distribution. Labor forecasting, demand surges and order priority can unbalance workloads and cause bottlenecks, slowing the shipment of customer orders. To better manage this situation, Warehouse Planner rapidly performs "what if" analysis against the backlog of shipment orders, accounting for available resources and organizing the workflow process to enhance order throughput and resource utilization.

  • Irista, Inc. (WMS, TMS) highlights the latest features of their iristaWare™ 8.3 release. New capabilities of the iristaWare suite include:

This approach simplifies contract maintenance, improves performance, and integrates UPS tracking capabilities at an enterprise level. In addition, customers can take advantage of Centralized PLD (Package Level Detail) upload to UPS along with Simplified Format Manifesting (SPF).
Enhanced LTL and Truckload Planning Functions: iristaTransport’s planning module includes new features to improve the planning of LTL and Truckload shipments including: the ability to maintain NMF classes by carton, as well as freight cost allocation routines that factor in both weight and freight cost, have been added. • Provia Software (WMS, TMS) Announces Windows 2000 Version of ViaWare WMS. Available December 15, Provia's Windows 2000 WMS has exactly the same robust functionality as the company's powerful Unix-based product because the same source code is used for both versions. By offering the same WMS product for both Unix and Windows 2000, Provia is delivering a standard, scaleable and database independent solution capable of meeting the needs of the most demanding WMS environments.

"For companies with advanced WMS requirements such as wave building, labor planning, task management, advanced kitting, automatic replenishment, compliance labeling, serial number/catch weight capture, cross docking, cluster/batch picking, and cycle counting, Provia's ViaWare WMS for Windows 2000 is up to the task," said Ken Lewis, Provia president and CEO. "Because we use the same source code for both platforms, the Windows 2000 version has already essentially been tested in the field by our current Unix customers. With Provia, there are none of the 'new' product concerns for prospects looking for a full-featured Windows 2000 WMS. The only difference between this version and our Unix version is the platform."
